Four years ago, I arrived at SFU (and in Canada for the first time) to begin my undergraduate degree in Environmental Science. I had spent most my life on a tiny island in the Indian Ocean called Mauritius. The tropical island is extremely dear to me, with its warm weather, delicious tropical fruits, and vibrant culture. Growing up there made me aware however of the sustainability and equity issues associated with limited resources. As I began my journey at SFU, I wanted to channel that awareness by contributing to groups that addressed social and environmental challenges.

I got involved with SFU 350, a team of students promoting action on climate issues. I soon discovered the valuable resource that Embark was at SFU. With SFU 350, I applied for Embark’s community grants that helped to grow the group’s fossil fuel divestment campaign. I was surprised that Embark was a student-run non-profit and wanted to get involved to contribute to the organization’s work. In my second year, I became the Space and Facilities Officer on the organization’s Board of Directors for one year. This role enabled me to become familiar with Embark’s Learning Garden, that I volunteered with afterwards. After being away for a co-op job abroad, I came back in 2016 and joined Embark’s Board of Directors again, this time as Secretary. Over the past four years, I have experienced the supportive environment Embark provides to students, that allowed me to explore my interests and develop precious skills to contribute to meaningful change.

I am grateful for the inspiring volunteers and staff that make Embark such a special organization.
