Welcoming Stephanie, Preethi and Emma, Our New Priority Area Coordinators

Oct 24, 2017 | Uncategorized

Embark welcomes three new coordinators to the team! With our new 2017-2020 Strategic Plan, we are happy to introduce Stephanie, Preethi, and Emma to help facilitate all the awesome new programming here at Embark.

Read below on each one of their journeys in sustainability leadership.

Stephanie Yu

Climate Action Coordinator

My background in sustainability has largely been shaped by my undergraduate experience at the University of Alberta. I completed a Certificate in Sustainability alongside my BA in Sociology, which deepened my understanding of environmental issues and their impacts. I also interned for an NGO based in NYC that focuses on building sustainable communities in East Africa. But among my experiences, my time volunteering for Sustain SU (the Student’s Union sustainability service) has had the greatest impact on my development as a leader in sustainability. I worked with amazing groups of people to implement initiatives and to plan events that centred around awareness and advocacy. I hope to further my knowledge in these areas by completing the Graduate Certificate in Development and Sustainability while I work towards my MA in Humanities at SFU.

As the Climate Action Coordinator for Embark, I look forward to working with new groups to continue to foster student leadership and to plan events that build solidarity within and beyond the SFU community.

Preethi Bokka

Social Sustainability Coordinator

I’m an international student from India in my fourth year pursuing an International Studies and an Economics degree. My experiences from my home country and my education met at a crossroad that opened my eyes view to sustainable issues as not only an important but also a necessary priority.

My interest in international development environmentally and socially promoted me start to volunteer with Embark as an active transportation volunteer and later, as a radio assistant; a local effort within SFU was my first access to understanding sustainability efforts on a larger scale.

I often wrote articles about Embark and their initiatives for SFU’s newspaper which showed me the diverse work that was taking place around me. It was in due time that I wanted to actively contribute to Embark’s program initiatives.

As the Social Sustainability Coordinator, I’m very excited about facilitating the Community Kitchens which I believe is a serious program that knits a community together. I am also ecstatic about co-developing a new initiative that addresses the social pillar of sustainability in the next few months—SFU deserves a community that is mentally, economically and emotionally strong.

Emma Warner-Chee

Food Systems Change Coordinator

My name is Emma, and I love food. I spent the past two summers working at the Renfrew-Collingwood Food Security Institute, sharing food stories, learning and teaching cooking and gardening skills and starting conversations about food justice.  I am currently studying sociology, but I would prefer to be in a garden, growing tasty tomatoes and discussing how we can work toward food sovereignty in our communities. I believe that food sovereignty is inherently bound in anti-colonial movements and the deconstruction of borders and I want to support those movements on unceded Coast Salish territories and beyond.
