Welcoming Katerina, Embark’s New Sustainability Peer Program Coordinator

Introducing Katerina Cookson, our new Sustainability Peer Program Coordinator. Read below about what sustainability means to her and her journey to get to this role.

Hi! I’m Katerina, and I am honoured to join Embark as the Coordinator for the Sustainability Peer Program. I’ll start by being honest – for most of my life, the idea of sustainability never crossed my mind. My sustainability story began a few years ago when I needed a less math-y B-Sci course and I took an introductory Environmental Science class. Life changer! Since then, I’ve started a REM minor, volunteered as a Media Research Associate with the David Suzuki Foundation, and nurtured my personal interests in grassroots clean energy projects and sustainable transportation (I’m obsessed with electric vehicles).

As a fifth-year Communication major, I’m curious about how we can present sustainability to different audiences in ways that resonate with their values and interests. For example, what kind of role will psychology and the media play in advancing sustainability? I also admire Embark’s holistic approach to sustainability as an intersection of social, economic, and ecological realms. I look forward to exploring this idea more deeply with the Sustainability Peers and helping others around me develop their own sustainability stories.

In my free time, you can find me eating ramen or pho and looking for cats to cuddle!
