Volunteer Recognition – Our Podcast Producer

Jun 9, 2019 | Team

Hi everyone! My name is Shannon Gilchrist, and I am a recent grad from SFU’s department of Physics! I joined Embark at the end of October 2018 and I’ve been working as the Podcast host and producer of Sustainability Circle Season 2 since then.

Why were you interested in volunteering at Embark?

I first jumped at the opportunity to volunteer with Embark when I saw the ad for a podcaster. I was super into podcasts and had dreamed of making my own but didn’t know where to start or what topics to cover. I was super new to sustainability and saw an amazing opportunity to show sustainability and Embark through that perspective.

What are the benefits of volunteering at Embark?

Not only is everyone so nice but I was able to get amazing support in my work. When I took on this project I did it for the fun of it and the chance to try something new but as I’ve been transitioning to work life I’ve noticed it’s something that employers get excited about especially here in Vancouver!

What are you most proud of adding/completing as a volunteer at Embark?

I am so proud of the podcast! I was super nervous going into recording but as I’ve been editing and getting a few people to listen to episodes I can’t help but smile at all the topics we’ve been able to cover and the amazing conversations we’ve had!

What are some main takeaways from volunteering?

Just do it! It seemed like a silly thing when I started but just putting yourself out there and taking on projects or contacting important people just to talk is amazing. I also learned how important it is to work with people who are passionate about what they’re doing!

Do you have any tips for future volunteers?

Don’t be afraid of being the person who doesn’t know anything. I barely knew anything about sustainability when I started but thanks to the help of friends and other Embarkers I understand the why different programs are being offered and what all the media hype is about.
