SFU Approves Policy to Reduce Carbon Footprint 30% by 2030
BURNABY, BC – On November 24, 2016 Simon Fraser University’s Board of Governor’s approved a policy, modelled after the University of Ottawa’s precedent, to reduce the university’s investment in carbon-intensive companies 30% by 2030. This target aligns with Canada’s national climate strategy. This decision follows many years of discussion with students, staff, and faculty, as well as the determination of SFU350, student divestment group, and Embark Sustainabillity, student sustainability empowerment nonprofit, in ensuring steps towards sustainable investments.
Embark views this decision as a demonstration of the university’s consideration of global climate impacts that scale beyond university grounds as well as the long-term health and safety of the Simon Fraser University (SFU) community. While heartened and encouraged by this decision, Erin Daly, Executive Director of Embark remarks, “Reaching this target will require on-going collaboration with student groups and proactive steps towards implementation. This initial decision shows the university’s willingness to engage in dialogue with students about this issue, and our future looks brighter as a result.”
