Explore food justice and reduce food waste through our food rescue program

Embark Sustainability’s

Food Rescue Program

We collect healthy yet imperfect-looking produce that does not meet the selling criteria of supermarket chains and redistribute it to Simon Fraser University (SFU) students for free or by donation. Food is collected from Nesters Market and distributed at SFU Burnaby.

Stop by and grab some brain food between classes! Distribution takes place throughout each academic term and does not occur during exam periods or breaks between terms.

Spring 2024 Distribution Schedule

Thursdays 1:30 pm – 2:45 pm
Blusson Hall, SFU Burnaby
Starting January 25th, 2024

Last date: March 21st, 2024

Embark Sustainability’s Food Rescue program connected me to new people every week. All through edible produce, and rich conversations about the food systems, and how to contribute to a more sustainable community.

DISTRIBUTION UPDATES

COVID-19 Precautions for Food Rescue

As the impact of COVID-19 continues, we aim to be transparent about all of our safety measures. Currently, we continue to run our award-winning Food Rescue program, incorporating the following changes:

  • Having Food Rescue volunteers and community members touch the produce as little as possible.
  • Practicing physical distancing at all times.
  • Providing an alcohol-based hand sanitizer at the Food Rescue distribution table for volunteers and community members to use.
  • Sanitizing all equipment with hard surfaces, with an alcohol-based sanitizer, before and after each distribution.
  • Ensuring that all volunteers wash their hands thoroughly, before, during, and after their shifts.
  •  Asking all Food Rescue volunteers to stay home if they are feeling sick or if they may have been exposed to someone with COVID-19.
