Embark is an independent, student-led not-for-profit based out of Simon Fraser University that empowers the next generation of student sustainability leaders. Embark’s 35,000+ members include all students enrolled in an SFU undergraduate or graduate degree program. Our mission is to engage our members in change making and inspire their sustainability leadership through our grant, advocacy, and student-designed programming.

Social Sustainability Volunteers work with the Social Sustainability Coordinator and fellow volunteers on social sustainability-related initiatives. In this exciting role, you will work to advance regenerative social processes by promoting equity, building capacity, and welcoming diverse perspectives in order to strengthen student communities.

Responsibilities
  • Support the Social Sustainability Coordinator in the planning and execution of Embark’s monthly Community Kitchen series.
  • Participate in a minimum of two Community Cohort meetings per semester with other Embark volunteers to reflect on ways to create a safe, livable community by respecting all forms of diversity and engaging in constructive dialogue with their peers.
  • Meet with Embark’s Diversity & Inclusion Working Group to explore innovative approaches to embedding equity, diversity, and inclusion into Embark’s organizational practices: Based on working group findings, contribute to the creation of a social sustainability guide for external facilitators and presenters; With the support of the Social Sustainability Coordinator, plan and co-host a workshop to inform the Embark team on the key elements of the guide.
  • Raise awareness around social sustainability-related issues and interact with the university community through in-person engagement.
  • Attend a semesterly check-in meeting with Embark’s Programs Manager.


Requirements
  • Available to attend two meetings per month: one working meeting and; one community cohort meeting.
  • Currently an SFU undergraduate student, graduate student, or Embark associate member.
  • A desire to work with a team of passionate students on addressing social sustainability topics!
