About Embark
Embark is a resource hub empowering SFU students on their sustainability journeys through dialogue and transformative action. We serve transformative communities by centring anti-oppression, decolonization, and equity in impactful programming, events, and initiatives. Through this work, we spark dialogue and drive action to dismantle oppressive frameworks within institutions and our interconnected climate and food systems.
About the Role
To build positive relationships and communicate with students on campus, soliciting and integrating their feedback into Embark’s initiatives.
Eligibility
This position is open to all members of Embark, which consists of all undergraduate and graduate students at Simon Fraser University, along with associate members. Up to one associate member (non-SFU student member) may be elected as a Director. New directors are elected at each Annual General Meeting of the society.
Embark’s Board of Directors strive to represent all undergraduate and graduate students at SFU, and centre diverse student voices in our work. We strongly encourage applications from members of communities that are marginalized or that experience structural discrimination.
Responsibilities
- Chair the Relations Committee. This includes but is not limited to: creating a committee, a work plan, calling meetings, developing agendas.
- Attend SFU student-led events and Embark programming to ensure positive relations and effective communication with the student body.
- Connect regularly with Embark’s Communications team to support member engagement through digital platforms
- Answer any questions students have about Embark and the organization’s work, which includes active participation in semesterly outreach opportunities.
- With input from Embark staff and the support of the Relations Committee, develop the annual member survey to gain student feedback.
- Report relevant relations activities to the Board of Directors.

- Excellent social and relationship building skills
- Ability to coordinate several projects at once
- Adaptability and a positive attitude in the face of challenges
- Communication skills, including the ability to draft timely and clear emails
- A passion for intersectional sustainability
Week-in-the-life
The week of a Relations Officer may include a meeting with the Director of Development to discuss ongoing or future student outreach opportunities. The Relations Officer may handle emails from students with inquiries about Embark and prepares the agenda for the relations committee meeting. The Relations Officer should also stay informed on Embark happenings, including current programming and opportunities for involvement, in order to effectively communicate with students.
