Embark is a resource hub empowering SFU students on their sustainability journeys through dialogue and transformative action. We serve transformative communities by centring anti-oppression, decolonization, and equity in impactful programming, events, and initiatives. Through this work, we spark dialogue and drive action to dismantle oppressive frameworks within institutions and our interconnected climate and food systems.
About the Role
The Governance Officer is in charge of policy decisions, as well as ensuring all existing policies are reviewed and updated on a timely basis.
Eligibility
This position is open to all members of Embark, which consists of all undergraduate and graduate students at Simon Fraser University, along with associate members. Up to one associate member (non-SFU student member) may be elected as a Director. New directors are elected at each Annual General Meeting of the society.
Embark’s Board of Directors strive to represent all undergraduate and graduate students at SFU, and centre diverse student voices in our work. We strongly encourage applications from members of communities that are marginalized or that experience structural discrimination.
Responsibilities
- Chair the Governance Committee, including creating a work plan, calling the monthly to bi-monthly meeting, developing the agenda, chairing the meeting and taking minutes (or appointing a meeting secretary to do so)
- With the support the Committee, create new and update existing policies and regulations to meet the evolving needs of the organization. This includes collaborating with the JEDDI Officer to embed justice, equity, diversity, decolonization, and inclusion principles into policies
- Provide written updates on the Governance Committee’s progress to the Board of Directors
- Monitor the Board’s effectiveness and identify opportunities to improve practices through policy
- Participate in Embark programming, events, and engage with student membership on a regular basis
- Maintain integrity and accountability
Ideal Candidates
- Solid decision-making skills
- Excellent communication skills – must be able to lead policy review sessions with committee members
- Strong attention to details
- Good organizational abilities
- Excellent analytical skills – must be able to analyze current happenings at Embark and write policies relevant to them
Week-in-the-life
Stay up to date with current happenings at Embark Sustainability. Maintain communications with board members and students. Work closely with the Chair of the Board, Co-Directors, and any other individuals necessary, to determine what policies need to be updated or written. Work with the committee members to review existing policies and regulations to ensure that they continue to guide the board effectively and efficiently and carry forward Embark’s organizational culture. Identify strategic changes in policies, regulation, board structure that allow Embark Sustainability to reach its mission.
