My name is Amal, and I am super excited to come on board the Embark team as the new Administrative Assistant! My personal passion lies in social justice, social sustainability and social entrepreneurship.
I spend a lot of time thinking about the power dynamics and the systemic institutions that exist worldwide to perpetuate cycles of injustice. Specifically, I think about the role we, as people of privilege, have to play in the work we do when we say we want to make a change in the world. We undoubtedly do this work with good intentions, but it isn’t out of imagination to understand that at times, we develop a sort of “heroism complex”, where we want to create solutions for the people we’re trying to help without including them in the creation process. As a result, we can sometimes unintentionally use our power to perpetuate the problem instead of setting the path for empowerment, in which our beneficiaries have the decision-making power and capacity to create their own solutions.
In my time at Embark, I look forward to exploring these questions further. When not engaged in contemplating these deep existential questions, you can find me hanging out with my family and friends, enjoying a nice cup of chai, with my nose deep in a good book.
