Indigenous Climate Tech Presenter

Location: Simon Fraser University (SFU) – Burnaby Campus
Open to: All Indigenous SFU students, associate members, or members of the community
Positions available: 4
Compensation: $100 honorarium, plus up to $60 for presentation materials
Presentation Date: Tuesday, March 25, 1:00pm – 4:00pm
Application Deadline: Sunday, March 16, at 11:59pm

Notes: Successful candidates must attend a mandatory 1.5-hour presenter orientation between March 12 – March 14 or March 18 – March 19. See application form for more info.

About Embark Sustainability

Embark Sustainability is a resource hub empowering SFU students and allies on their sustainability journeys through dialogue and transformative action. We serve transformative communities by centering anti-oppression, decolonization, and equity in impactful programming, events, and initiatives. Through this work, we spark dialogue and drive action to dismantle oppressive frameworks within institutions and our interconnected climate and food systems.

About the Role

We are seeking presentations from Indigenous students, graduate students, and community members who are eager to share:
  • Traditional Climate Technologies: Showcasing practices and technologies that have been integral to your Indigenous community for generations that either are used to address environmental challenges or climate overall.
  • Innovative Climate Solutions: Presentations on newly developed technologies or innovative approaches addressing today’s environmental challenges.

This event was inspired by an insightful discussion with an Indigenous student who shared how cedar hats function as a climate technology: when it rains, the cedar expands to help keep the wearer dry, and in hot conditions, the bark contracts to create airflow. Recognizing the gap in knowledge for students at SFU, our student-directed Climate Equity team is creating a space for meaningful knowledge sharing.

How you choose to present is entirely up to you. Each presenter will be given up to $60 for any presentation-related materials. Please aim to present for about 10-20 minutes.
