BURNABY, BC – Embark thanks the Board of Governors student candidates for considering sustainable topics in their platforms this year. Candidates who care about sustainability can advance sustainability-minded policy and support SFU’s commitments to be an institutional leader in sustainability.

Embark would like to recognize the undergraduate and graduate candidates’ pledges to sustainability. Among the four undergraduates, Alam Khehra aims to lower campus food prices to increase accessibility and promises to hold SFU to its Sustainability 20-year vision and 30 by 30 policy goals. Christine Leclerc will actively oppose Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain Expansion Project, supporting student safety and environmental sustainability. Both candidates, as well as the third candidate Parham Elmi, have also pledged to increase investment in mental health resources. All candidates will strive to reduce financial accessibility barriers.

Graduate students have also expressed support for sustainable policies and projects. To ensure student health and safety, Thomas Budd pledges to oppose Kinder Morgan’s tank farm expansion on Burnaby mountain. Budd also supports the creation of a fossil-free endowment option for SFU’s donors in order to further reduce SFU’s carbon investment footprint.

Members can vote at https://www.sfu.ca/students/elections/students.html until 4 PM on February 23, 2018. As part of SFU’s senior governing body, candidates can affect its policies, governance, and investments. Embark looks forward to the new Board of Governors’ sustainability efforts.
