Community Kitchen: Healing the Kitchen

🌱 Join us for this month’s Community Kitchen event, “Healing in the Kitchen,” as we come together to recognize and celebrate the Black community and the various cultures within. This event, open to the SFU Community, is led by and centers SFU Black community members and is all about fostering a community of care, where we connect, share, and uplift one another through the power of food.🍽️ 

We’ll be making:

  • Jamaican Callaloo
  • Jamaican Salted Fish Fritters
  • Kelewele (Ghanaian Spicy Fried Plantain)
  • Cocadas (a coconut sweet which is popular all over Abya Yala and is directly inherited from African ancestors)

Whether you’re a seasoned chef or new to the kitchen, all are welcome! This event is first-come first-serve until we reach capacity, so we encourage you to register and arrive 10 minutes early. Thanks and see you there!✨

ABOUT THE FACILITATORS

Tricia-Kay Williams
Tricia-Kay Williams has a BA degree in Psychology from the York University in Toronto O.N. and an MA degree in Counselling Psychology at the Adler University in Vancouver B.C. Tricia has extensive experience counselling individuals and families and is skilled in treating: Trauma, Anxiety, Transitional/Career and Relational issues. She is also an active community and social services professional who worked for some years as a Residential Youth Worker and in on the board for new Hope Community Services serving refugee families. Tricia is an advocate for anti-racism that affects BIPOC individuals and consults with organizations to foster a more anti-racist approach. Tricia is the owner of a counselling practice called Metamorphose Counselling and is the host of a YouTube channel called Meta Transitions.

Paola Quirós-Cruz
Paola Quirós-Cruz is one of the educators at the Sexual Violence Support & Prevention Office. Paola is responsible for overseeing the education undergraduate and graduate portfolios, as well as co-leading numerous SVSPO awareness campaigns. Since an early age, Paola has been passionate about cooking, and at one point, she even considered becoming a chef. Paola enjoys connecting with people through hosting and food, and celebrates the Doñas (matriarchs) who have taught Paola unforgettable and tasty recipes by sharing dishes and food with the community. Paola ensures to pique your curiosity about Latin American cuisine and invites you to explore the importance of ingredients and flavors in the region.

Event Accessibility

Embark Sustainability events are free and open to Embark Sustainability members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students, as well as Embark Sustainability Associate Members.

This event will be held indoors at the SUB Community Kitchen, room #2125 of the Student Union Building (SUB), SFU Burnaby. Accessibility details include:

  • As we’ll be addressing sensitive topics, it’s important that our attendees are able to address their needs in the moment. Attendees are free to opt in and opt out of activities as suits their needs throughout the event, including exiting and re-entering the event space.
  • Some appliances and counter areas of this room are not accessible when using a wheelchair or other mobility aids. The dining/lounge area is accessible when using a wheelchair or other mobility aids.
  • We aim to host a scent-free space. Please refrain from wearing scented products in attendance of this event.
  • Unfortunately, we cannot provide ASL interpretation at this time. We will be providing written recipe instructions.
