Food Justice Facilitator

Duration: January 2025 – April 2025
Hours: 2-3 hours per week

Reports to: Food Justice Coordinator
Start Date: Week of Jan 20th, 2024 (Collective will decide best day to meet)
Attendance: Consistent attendance is essential for this volunteer position. Weekly meetings are mandatory; however, absences due to illness or other valid reasons are understandable and should be communicated in advance whenever possible.

Embark Sustainability is an independent, student-centered not-for-profit based out of Simon Fraser University that catalyzes student sustainability (un)learning journeys for the next generation of leaders. We do this by engaging SFU students in programs, events, and other initiatives that spark dialogue and cultivate action to address systemic challenges within our climate and food systems. Our work is supported by the 35,000+ undergraduate and graduate student members that we represent.

About the Role

Food Justice Facilitators will work with the Food Justice Coordinator and other collective members on planning monthly Community Kitchens and 1 Food Justice event. In this exciting role, you will be able to expand your knowledge of food security, food sovereignty, and food assets. You will create space for SFU students to get involved, learn, and take action on Food Justice issues through engagement and events planned and hosted by you. This is a perfect opportunity if you’re ready to facilitate creative and exciting learning avenues for students in an environmental non-profit setting.

Responsibilities

  • Attend weekly meetings with the Food Justice Collective to prepare and organize initiatives.
  • Explore and deepen your understanding of Food Justice by engaging with resources on your own, and discuss these during collective meetings.
  • Attend a semesterly check-in meeting with Embark’s Director of Engagement.
  • Plan and host events:
    • Raise awareness around food justice issues and engage with the university community. 
    • Co-develop events to engage fellow students about sustainable food systems and food literacy.
    • Plan and help facilitate monthly Community Kitchen events 1-3 times per semester and 1 large scale event.

Requirements

  • Availability on most Wednesdays for weekly collective meetings, and hosting events.
  • Currently an SFU undergraduate student, graduate student, or Embark associate member.
  • A desire to work with a team of passionate students on addressing sustainability topics with an intersectional lens!

Assets

  • Project management skills and experiences
  • Interest and/or background in Food Justice
