We serve transformative communities by centring anti-oppression, decolonization, and equity in impactful programming, events, and initiatives. Through this work, we spark dialogue and drive action to dismantle oppressive frameworks within institutions and our interconnected climate and food systems.
About the Role
To regularly review the Society’s spending and finances to ensure they are consistent with the budget, and assist the Co-Directors as they prepare and present an annual budget for Embark to the board of directors for approval.
Eligibility
This position is open to all members of Embark, which consists of all undergraduate and graduate students at Simon Fraser University, along with associate members. Up to one associate member (non-SFU student member) may be elected as a Director. New directors are elected at each Annual General Meeting of the society.
Embark’s Board of Directors strive to represent all undergraduate and graduate students at SFU, and centre diverse student voices in our work. We strongly encourage applications from members of communities that are marginalized or that experience structural discrimination.
Responsibilities
- Chair the Finance and Audit Committee, including creating a work plan, calling the meeting, developing the agenda, chairing the meeting.
- With the support of the Finance & Audit Committee, oversee and review the Society’s monthly finances and spending.
- Provide a report to the Board of Directors monthly regarding the Society’s spending in comparison to the annual budget, a statement of fund balances, and any general issues that require the Board’s attention.
- With the Finance & Audit Committee, review and provide feedback on a draft annual budget prepared by the Co-Directors.
- With the support of the committee and Director of Development, regularly assess potential areas of financial risk and develop contingency plans to secure funding where needed, ie. through a referendum or grants
- Support the process of the annual audit by:
- Ensuring the Society meets all of its disclosure obligations
- Reviewing the material and management advice produced by the auditor
- Providing recommendations to the Board of Directors regarding the financial statements provided by the Audit

Week-in-the-life
- The Treasurer’s responsibilities change over the course of the fiscal year. On a weekly/monthly basis, the Treasurer schedules the next Finance and Audit committee meeting,
- Keep up to date with Embark’s current happenings. To track relative spending, notice and clarify any inconsistencies in monthly financial documents, and reconcile the organization’s financial statements after each meeting.
- Create an agenda before the monthly meeting with the Committee’s suggestions
- Chair the Finance and Audit Committee meeting. For financial reports contact the Director of Development.
- Fill out the director’s report monthly and present the highlights of the committee meeting to the Board of directors.
- Participate in another committee meeting monthly. This will be decided early during or right after the on-boarding process.
